Our Philosophy
A philosophy that targets those coaching our rangatahi (12-18 yr old’s), but one that is just as relevant for those coaching five year olds, aspiring young elite athletes, and those at the highest levels of sport. John Wooden’s quote beautifully reflects this…
This philosophy also aligns with Sport New Zealand’s ‘Balance is Better’ philosophy, because together, our belief is that an athlete-centered holistic approach to youth sport coaching will help grow, nurture and develop our young athletes to become better athletes, better people, and better New Zealanders.
If we can enhance the capability of our youth sport coaches, young athletes will have richer, more positive sporting experiences, and are therefore likely to stay in sport longer.
Our Strategy
The Foundation is concerned that too many of our youth are dropping out of sport because they have had a negative experience, and as a result, are missing out on the holistic benefits that a quality sporting experience can provide.
Unfortunately, those experiences are primarily determined by an adult, whether they are a coach, parent, referee, umpire or an administrator. Our focus is on coaching.
As a result, we are addressing this problem by promoting a coaching philosophy that prioritises the personal development and enjoyment of every athlete and team.
By delivering an athlete-centered approach to youth sport coaching, we believe we will grow, nurture and develop our young athletes to become better athletes, better people, and better New Zealanders.
We want our rangatahi to have a lifetime love and involvement in sport.
